Frequently Asked Questions
These are some of the most common questions that we are often asked by students, but are by no means exhaustive. If you have a question that is not answered here, please contact us.
What are the assignments like?
Most modules require you to complete one or more assignments. These may take various forms from a written essay to a practical implementation and demonstration. The aim of the assessments are to see if you have met the learning outcomes for the module.
Your formal assignments are marked and moderated by the tutors. You then receive some feedback on your assignment and your provisional mark (provisional because it must be moderated by the External Examiner and approved by the Subject Assessment Board (SAB).
What's the pass mark?
Some assessment is informal and its primary aim is to give you feedback on your progress. Other assessment is formal and you need to 'pass' in order to receive the academic credits for the module. You need at least 40% to pass. 50% to 59% is Good. 60% to 69% is Very Good 70%+ is Excellent.
What if I can't submit by the deadline?
You need to complete and submit the formal assignment for a module by the given deadlines. If you can't submit in time for a good reason (eg illness), you need to contact your programme administrator before the assignment deadline to explain your reasons and provide evidence if possible. We call these reasons Extenuating Circumstances (or ECs for short). These are considered by an Extenuating Circumstance Panel and if accepted, you will be allowed to submit the assignment at a later date, agreed by the module team.
What if I fail a module?
If you get less than 40%, the Subject Assessment Board may decide to refer you. This means that you are allowed to rework the assignment (or an equivalent piece of work) by a specified deadline. If you pass the referral your mark is 'capped' at 40%.
