Embedding engineering in the science curriculum
What?
Engineering Everywhere is a DVD ROM resource that brings relevant and contextualised engineering content, ideas and concepts into the Key Stage 4 classroom. The engineering focused materials have been developed with the aim of supporting the practical course work component of the Applied Science specifications. It will also provide stimulating contexts for the teaching and learning of the Additional Science specifications.
How?
This innovative resource supports applied science GCSEs through:
- Engaging video material
- Follow-up activities
- 24 new practicals
- Direct curriculum links
There are eight themes used in this resource for the applied science GCSE, each illustrating how engineering is integral to them. These are Bikes, Television, Fragrance, Thrills, Skeletons, Robots, Sails, Water. All eight themes will be available free of charge on DVD ROM from April 2008 together with the comprehensive Professional Development CD ROM. To order your copy now, fill in your contact details by clicking on the big DVD button above.
Why?
Engineering Everywhere is an EPSRC funded project aimed at making engineering and engineers a transparent feature in the examined science curriculum for young people. Despite a cascade of initiatives from many sources, engineering remains a Cinderella concept at school level.
Inaccurate perceptions of engineers as low paid, low skilled workers are still widespread and are a major influence in the poor uptake of engineering courses by school leavers. This has led to a dearth of well-qualified engineers entering the research community and the labour market in the UK.
Who?
This resource has been developed in collaboration by the University of Glasgow, Centre for Science Education at Sheffield Hallam University, and 4science with the support of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. It is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and evaluated by Graphic Science.
