    Increasing numbers of celebrities are actively seeking new skills and launching second careers in a bid to safeguard against the ever-present threat of diminishing celebrity status.

    The number of City of London staff joining charitable projects sponsored by their employers jumped by 40 per cent this year as the Square Mile boosted its efforts to both behave more altruistically and promote a skilled local workforce.

    A twin attack on the benefit culture by tackling the hard-core unemployed and stopping teenage dependency on handouts will be announced by Gordon Brown next week in plans for a "new welfare state".
