  • Government - New bill to equip the country in meeting the education and skills needs of the economy (DIUS, 5 February 2009)
    New legislation to help deal with the country's long-term economic and social needs, was published today by Skills Secretary John Denham and Children's Secretary Ed Balls.
  • Higher education - Government outlines plan to tackle NCEE recommendations (DIUS, 2 February 2009)
    Plans to promote better links between universities, colleges and schools to help improve achievements and aspirations for young people will be published by Higher Education Minister David Lammy today.

    Bright children in the lowest performing schools are being failed by teachers who are actively putting them off applying to the top universities for fear they "won't fit", according to the higher education minister, David Lammy.

    Student Finance England is a partnership between the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills and the Student Loans Company Ltd to provide financial support to students entering Higher Education in the UK on behalf of the UK government.

    A fortnight ago, 'The Journal' reported on the severe lack of job opportunities in many sectors for graduates. However, opportunities in sectors like retail and engineering are increasing despite a global recession.

    The Scottish Government is spending £125,000 on a PR campaign to encourage young people to sign up to a skills competition.
