SmiLE! Smart Learning Environments for Smart Teaching

HEA STEM: SmiLE! Smart Learning Environments for Smart Teaching

  • Date: 21 Mar 2014
  • Start Time: 12:00 pm
  • Location/venue: Sheffield Hallam University, Aspect Court, City Campus, Howard Street Sheffield

Smart technologies can promote autonomy, flexibility and innovation where individual academics are open to recognising and exploring the opportunity. Creative academic practitioners, using personal tablets and apps, are able to define and support contextualised smart learning environments enabling student-centred teaching. The seminar looks at associated attitudes, ideas and good practice.

By the end of the seminar delegates will have,

  • Understood the capabilities of smart devices (e.g. tablets and phones) and the range ‘apps’ for supporting the academic role by using a Smart Learning Environment taxonomy and example scenarios;
  • Learnt how STEM academics are responding to opportunities provided by personal smart technology;
  • Reflected on their own readiness to use personal and institutional smart technologies to change and improve their existing teaching paradigm by considering the findings from our smart teaching research;
  • Generated and considered scenarios for innovative smart teaching;

Learnt about the risks associated with smart device teaching and how to manage these.

The workshop will be led by Andrew Middleton, Chair of the UK Media-Enhanced Learning Special Interest Group and Dr Anne Nortcliffe, Senior Lecturer, Software Engineering and Computing. Other academic and student speakers will be invited to contribute based upon the outcomes of current research* into BYOD approaches and attitudes of academic staff.
