Early career training and responsibilities

SLTs perspectives

Woodlands school is a secondary school in Basildon, Essex. Here the deputy head for professional development talks about her role.

Professional development and support

The interviewee describes how every teacher has a training plan which is a mixture of what is important for school and what's important for personal priorities.

Early career teachers have the opportunity to observe and work with ASTs and visit other schools. Second year teachers continue to have the mentor (although less formally) that they had in their NQT year.

Early promotion and responsibility

Here the interviewee describes how the school is keen to promote early career teachers and give them responsibility early on. The school believes that this is of benefit to them personally, but also of benefit to the school. She believes that this encourages retention of staff. The school has links to Masters programme at an HEI which is open to all early career teachers.
