About SINTO
SINTO is a partnership of library and information services in the Yorkshire and north Derbyshire region with the goal of improving services to users through co-operation, training and planning. Membership is open to any organisation providing an information service or with an interest in librarianship and information management.
Our Mission:
Information in all its forms is vital to the economy, commercial success, education, democracy and the well-being of the citizen. SINTO exists to enable the fullest use of information as a resource by bringing together the information services of local organisations in the public and private sectors.
Our Goals:
To provide a framework for information providers to work together for their mutual benefit.
To develop and promote co-operation, partnership and planning as a means of achieving more efficient and effective information services and thus contribute to the economic and social infrastructure of Yorkshire and the East Midlands.
To provide training and professional development opportunities for LIS staff in our region.
To promote investment in information within the region and represent the LIS sector within local, regional and national forums.
History
1932. J.P. Lamb, Chief Librarian Sheffield City Libraries, presents a paper to the 9th ASLIB Conference "The Public Library as an Aid to Industry"
1933. Scheme for the Interchange of Technical Publications set up to enable the inter-library loan of material between the public library and company libraries.
1953. The name Sheffield Interchange Organisation (SINTO) adopted.
1989. Sheffield adopts the Library & Information Plan concept, and the Board for Libraries and Information Services in Sheffield (BLISS) is set up.
1993. SINTO and BLISS merge to form the Sheffield Information Organisation, retaining the acronym SINTO.
2003. The organisation is renamed SINTO: the Information Partnership for South Yorkshire & north Derbyshire.
Documents
SINTO in its present form was established through a Foundation Agreement between Sheffield City Council, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. The text of this document can be seen here.
SINTO is run in line with the SINTO Constitution.
Executive Board
SINTO is run by its Members.
It is managed by an Executive Board which is advised by the Members' Forum.
SINTO employs a Secretariat consisting of a Director and an Assistant.
Carl Clayton BA, MCLIP is the Director of SINTO. He took up the post in September 1996.
