Striders Cross Country Championship Race
 |
The club has traditionally organised an annual club cross country championship race. For many years this took place around the christmas/new year period in Graves Park; the actual route varying from year to year though the distance was usually between 4 and 6 miles in length. From 2004/05 to 2006/2007 Striders held a joint club championship race with members of City of Sheffield AC/Sheffield Running Club. For 2007/2008 and 2008/09 the club championship race was incorporated in the open cross country race organised by Sheffield R.C. In 2009/10 the race was moved from its traditional date and now takes place in mid October as a standalone event. The women complete 3 laps (4.2 miles) and the men run 4 laps (5.6 miles). The prizes for the leading Striders in each category are presented at the club A.G.M. in March following the race. |

| Report of the 2010/11 Championship Race held in Graves Park on Sunday 17th October 2010 |
Helen Calder and Steven Hargreaves led the Striders home in the annual club X-Country Race held on a gorgeous, sunny, autumn day in Graves Park. Alison Barrett, Carol Beattie, Liz Robinson, Trevor Burton, Paul Stewart and Roger Stevenson were champions in their respective age categories amongst a record field of 49 runners. It really felt like the whole of the club was pulling together as a large number of runners turned up a hour before the race to make light work of marking out the course, putting up the club tent and sorting out the late entries. Everyone then helped dismantle the course at the end. Thanks also go to St John Ambulance for providing first aid. The atmsophere in the post race social was super with runners, helpers and their families enjoying an excellent buffet. The winners in each category will be presented with their club shield at the AGM in March 2011. |

| Report of the 2009/10 Championship Race held in Graves Park on Sunday 18th October 2009 |
Helen Calder and Phil Cooper were the first Striders home in the club X-Country Race held on a late autumn morning in Graves Park. The decision to move the race from late December to mid October and to organise it as a standalone event for the first time in 6 years seemed to be popular with club members as an impressive 29 men and 13 women finished the race. The weather could not have been more perfect with light winds and pleasant sunshine the order of the day. Many runners helped the organisers to set the course out prior to the race and to dismantle it at the end. Thanks also go to the unsung heroes who volunteered as marshalls, timekeepers and first aid personnel. After the race most runners and helpers retired to the local pub to enjoy the buffet of hot and cold sandwiches and chips. The winners will be presented with their club shield at the AGM in March 2010. |

| Report of the 2007/08 Championship Race held in Graves Park on Saturday 29th December 2007 |
Simon Bennett and Carol Beattie won the Striders 2007/08 X-Country Championship Race which took place on Saturday 29th 2007 as part of the inaugural Sheffield Open X-Country Races jointly organised with Sheffield Running Club. The race was held on a cold, clear morning. The strong gusty winds made running difficult and and times slow. Whilst the overall event attracted well over 100 runners from as far away as Hull, Wakefield and East Cheshire the number of members from our club who participated was the lowest for some years. Thanks went to the volunteers from both clubs who set up and marshalled the course in the bitterly cold conditions and to the race sponsors Keep on Running. | 2006/07 Championship Race held in Graves Park on Saturday 30th December 2006: Race Report |
Stuart Maycock and Carole Beattie won the Striders 2006/07 X-Country Championship which took place on Saturday 30th 2006 in conjunction with City of Sheffield A.C. The race was held in a boggy Graves Park on a cold and windy day and had the biggest turn out of runners for some years. In the men's race Strider Stuart Maycock led young Abdi Ahmed (racing on his 16th birthday!) from City of Sheffield for the first lap before Abdi took off on the second and showed why he has been picked to run for England. In the women's race City of Sheffield's Jenny Horn beat the first Strider Carole Beattie by some 3 minutes. Thanks went to the volunteers from both clubs who set up and marshalled the course in very cold and wet conditions. After the race most runners and helpers retired to the local pub to enjoy the buffet. |

| 2005/06 Championship Race held on Sunday 22nd January 2006: Race Report |
Dave Ansell won the 2005/06 Championship race which took place on Sunday 22nd Janaury 2006 in Graves Park; there were no women competitors in this year's race. Dave Nicholls took an illegal running start before the whistle went but within a few strides nomal service was resumed when most of the field overtook him! Dave Ansell led the race from start to finish, extending his lead on each lap and even having time to fend off a dog on the way round, before eventually winning in 25 minutes 47 seconds. After the first lap most people had settled into their pace and no real fighting for positions seemed to occur, apart from the big push on lap 3 from Simon Wiles who just took Dave Beech near the finish. |

| 2004/05 Championship Race held on Sunday 30th December 2004: Race Report |
Dave Ansell and Julie Birch were the Striders Championships for 2004/05. They were the first Striders home in the race which took place in a very boggy Graves Park just after the New Year. This X-Country Championship Race was held for the first time in conjunction with City of Sheffield A.C. and was considered a success. Thanks went to the volunteers from both clubs who set up and marshalled the course in very cold and wet conditions. Considering the atrocious weather in the couple of hours leading up to the race it was no surprise that there were only 24 hardy souls in the race. |

| 2003/04 Sheffield Relay Race held on Sunday 4th January 2004: Race Report |
Stuart Maycock completed the treble by adding the 2003/04 club cross country championship title to the 10km and road race championships secured earlier in the year. He beat veteran John Kerr in a close finish to this race. Dennis Crossland returning to form took the veterans (O/40) prize with John taking the supervets (O/50) trophy. Sadly no women competed in the race. 18 Striders lined up next to the pavilion in Graves Park for the start of the race . The early running saw guest runners Malcolm Taylor from City of Sheffield A.C. and Mark Bruce from Loughborough College take up the front positions. But Stuart and John soon got into their stride and by the end of the first of three short laps the natural order had been restored. From then on it was just a matter of by how much Stuart would win by.
Thanks went to Alan Brook and Roger Stevenson who between them set the 6km course out early on the morning of the race, started the race, marshalled, noted down the times and places of all the runners and then at the end of the race went around the course and collected all the marker flags. |
