Percy Pud 10km : 2006 Race Report

Two Sheffield athletes dominated the 14th New Balance Percy Pud 10km road race which took place in Sheffield’s Loxley Valley on Sunday 3rd December 2006.

John Heneghan, a PHD student at Sheffield University, won the men’s race in a time of 31 minutes 59 seconds and Sheffield teacher Jenny Murray was the fastest women finishing in 36 minutes 31 seconds.

In a close fought race it was 7km before Heneghan could establish any lead over Doncaster’s Carl Ryde. It was only towards the end of the race that Heneghan was able to pull away to leave Ryde trailing 20 seconds behind. Phillip Hoole from Rotherham was third.

“I had no idea what to expect as this was my first ever road race,” said Heneghan whose previous successes have all been in cross country for his home club of Pudsey. “However I did enjoy the experience and this will encourage me to race more often on the road.”

In the women’s race Jenny Murray, a PE teacher at Sheffield’s King Edward VII School, beat Barnsley’s Kaeti MacKenzie by over half a minute. Jo Walker from Rotherham was third.

Wild winds and rain failed to put a dampener of the race which attracted a record 1200 runners many raising money for their chosen charities and all receiving a Christmas pudding for their efforts.

“It was a great success despite the weather,” said Richard Dunk from the organising club Steel City Striders.

Amongst the finishers were two local athletes Stuart Maycock and Shaun Marsden who ran in a two man camel outfit and beat most of the field finishing in 40 minutes 18 seconds – a new world record for a 10km race by 2 people dressed in a 2 man panto outfit!
