The South Yorkshire 5 mile Race Series consists of four 5-mile races is organised by the South Yorkshire Athletics Association. The races are held on Wednesday evenings during the late spring and early summer months. The series is only open to members of running clubs in the South Yorkshire area. How to join Steel City Striders>> Competitors must be aged 15 years or more on the day of the first race.

Entry is through the clubs. You collect your number prior to, or on the night of, your first race of the series from the club road secretary (please arrive early for the first race - there may be a queue!) and then keep the same number for the remaining races. You can do as many or as few of the 4 races as you wish. The races are very popular with runners of all abilities within the local clubs. The atmosphere at all races is very friendly even given the obvious inter club rivalry. The cost of the race numbers are £6 but this is met from club funds. Wednesday 26th March - Oxspring, Wagon and Horses pub, Penistone, 7pm prompt start.

Parking on the football field where the Trunce race starts. This is the same venue as last year. Do NOT park on the course or in the estate or pub car park. The finish is in the estate on the road. Please do not stay near the finish area, go into the field to meet other runners. Last year we caused a problem for local people and we do not want to annoy them again. The course is a bit hilly but the last mile or so is downhill. The loft bar in the pub will be open after the race, the toilets are there also.

Wednesday 11th April - Silkstone Common, Barnsley, 7pm prompt start.

This is a new venue and course. The venue is about 1 mile past Silkstone Common at a stables/indoor football and restaurant. There is plenty of parking so don’t park on the road. There are also toilets inside the building. Leave the M1 at J37 and go left into Dodworth Village, past Brooklands Hotel and fork left, 2 miles further on is Silkstone Common. Go through the village and the venue is on the left.

Wednesday 25th April - Low Bradfield, Sheffield, 7pm prompt start.

This is the same course as last year but the start and finish area slightly changed. We will now finish down the track off the road towards the Dam side. Please do not clog the finish area and move away as soon as possible. If you go along the track it leads back to the village. Runners are asked NOT to park on the dam wall or on the course. Parking is at the cricket club and on the hill going out of the village. Also do not park on the narrow road down to the village as this is part of the course. The cricket club bar will be open.

Wednesday 9th May - Pickburn Arms, Brodsworth Hall, Doncaster, 7pm prompt start.

This is the same course as last year but 5 miles this time! There is plenty of parking at the Garden centre – please do not park on the course or in the village. After the race there will be food and maybe a hog roast at the pub. The landlord is putting up a marquee and the prizes will be given out there. If you are a prize winner please stay or get someone to pick it up for you.

Numbers are £6 for the series (free to members of Steel City Striders as part of their subs). Please PIN them to vests, do not use these Triathlon waist bands as it is difficult to read the numbers when they are not clear to the recorders.

Club vests MUST be worn, No club vest = disqualified from team event. NO ear phones to be worn or runners will be disqualified and will NOT appear on results. (This is for safety reasons and UKA rules state that they should not be worn in the competition area. That includes runners at the back of the field. There will be spotters watching.)

The winner was Julian Lings (Sheffield RC) in a time of 26:24. There were 315 finishers.

33 Striders took part on an excellent night for racing – cool with little wind. The course took in one and a third laps of Damflask reservoir with runners only having to climb the hill once (despite some mistakenly saving their energy for a hill finish). The winner was Shaun Dimelow (Barnsley Harriers) in a time of 26:26. There were 295 finishers. This was a counter in the club road championships.

So you want to design a new course in an area surrounded by quiet, undulating country roads ideal for a 5 mile race? How do you go about it? Do you have over 2 miles of the race held on potentially muddy trails. Or do you include a ridiculously steep hill so that the finish is significantly higher than the start? Or do you have a course which measures only 4.72 miles on the GPS? Surely not. A pity because the parking was excellent, the evening lovely and sunny and the area around Brodsworth was looking its best at this time of year. The winner was John Heneghan (Sheffield RC) in a time of 24:35. There were 290 finishers. Striders times will not count towards club records!

The final race of the season was held on a gorgeous sunny evening in mid May. The hill is still as stiff as ever but is compensated for by the long downhill finish. The race was won by Julian Lings (Sheffield RC) in a time of 26:34. There were 275 finishers.

A record 35 Striders took part in the first South Yorkshire 5 mile race despite the bitterly cold weather. The first mile was up hill into the teeth a a freezing cold northerly - delightful! The middle part of the hilly race was reasonably sheltered from the wind but it seemed just as the downhill arrived so did another headwind.
