Striders 'Special' Training Runs

These are training runs which are designed to be a bit different to the regular club runs. They may be occasional Sunday morning or summer evening training runs starting from a variety of venues on the outskirts of Sheffield or winter off-road, head- torch training runs. These 'special' training runs are predominately off-road and make use of the trails and paths in and around the city, and can be fairly strenuous. Typically the distances of the runs are between 8 and 10 miles in length and can take between 1½ to 2 hours to complete. Sometimes there is an easier paced group that cover 6 - 8 miles in around 1 - 1½ hours. The dates and venues are announced in Striders News, via email or text to members and on this page. The Sunday morning runs start at 10.00am and the Wednesday evening runs start at 7.00pm unless otherwise stated.

The first of these runs back in 1986 was planned as an 11 mile run setting out from Fairholmes, but the deep snow meant that parking was difficult and the run started from the main A57 snake pass! Since then the weather on these runs has only once reached these extremes (Dec 09 - Jan 10) but has typically ranged from wonderful mild winter sunshine to driving hail. The runs take place regardless of how bad the weather is (within safety limits)! If the weather is inclement you will need to be appropriately dressed including full body cover. You will need a good quality head torch to be able to join the winter off road runs. Over the years we have been joined by members of other clubs and we always extend a warm welcome to members of any club who wish to join us for the run.

Next 'Special' Training Run.........

.........Winter Off Road Head Torch Training Run, Wednesday 3rd November 2010, 7.00pm from Graves Tennis Centre

.........New Year's Eve Training Run, Friday 31st December 2010, 9.00am from Fairholmes car park

The head torch runs should take 1hr 30 to 1hr 40 minutes - 10-15 minutes longer than the usual Wednesday night runs. Pace will be slow to medium. It will be quite muddy in places, so wear appropriate footwear - trail shoes are preferable. Don't worry if you've not run off-road in the dark before - it's quite easy once you get used to trying to step into a tiny patch of light from your torch.

Remember that off-road running has more dangers associated with it than road running and at night, these dangers are worse because of the limited visibility. Consequently, you should only take part in this run if you are comfortable with the fact that you might end up face down in a muddy puddle with 4 or more broken limbs. There's really only one rule to remember: No Torch - No Run. A good quality LED hand-torch is perfectly acceptable, but head torches are generally easier because they leave your hands free for pulling twigs out of your eyes!
