Welcome to the SHU Guide to IT where you can access all the information you need about IT facilities and services at Hallam. Click on each box below for more information about each topic.

Logging In

When your account is activated and you are ready to log in, please remember that your username is different to your student ID.

To get your username you change the first digit of your student number to the corresponding letter so, 1=a, 2=b, and so on.

Therefore, if your student number is 23456789, your username is b3456789.

If you are having problems logging in try a password reset here: http://go.shu.ac.uk/password/

University Email

Your University Email account is powered by Gmail. It is how we will contact you while you are studying with us so make sure you check it regularly.

You can access your email account off campus and on your mobile phone to make sure you don't miss any important emails.

You can also forward your emails to another email account.

Don't get caught by a phishing scam - read our tips for staying safe online.

Saving your work

Here at SHU we have several places you can save your work.

Your Home Drive (F:) is your personal network space and can only be accessed by you. It is the safest place to save your work and it is backed up regularly.

You can access your Home Drive anywhere by using a web browser or webDAV.

You also have a University Google Drive that runs alongside your email account that allows you to save and share files from anywhere. On top of this you now have access to OneDrive for Business. Check out the information on Office 365 below to find out more.

USB memory sticks are not your friend. Don't fall victim to a broken or corrupted memory stick - use your Home Drive for all your important files.

Wi-Fi

To find out how to connect your device to the campus Wi-Fi, click on the device or operating system you use below.

Android | iPhone/iPad/iPod | Mac | Win 7 | Win 8

You can also access the Eduroam network which allows you to access Wi-Fi at Hallam as well as lots of other Universities across the country.

Printing

Printing at SHU is a three step process:

1. Top up your Papercut account - you can add cash directly to Papercut or you can transfer funds from your SHUcard.

2. Send your work to the printer - the way you print will depend on whether you are in a learning centre or in a PC room.

3. Find a printer and collect your work.

The Print Shop is located on Level 1 of the Adsetts Learning Centre and provides printing and binding services for students. You can also order your printing online.

You can use our All-in-one printers to photocopy and scan.

Shuspace

MyHallam is Sheffield Hallam University's student portal, through which you can access a vast range of information to support you at University, as well as your email and Blackboard sites.

The knowledge base is a huge database of information and contains everything you need to know about studying at Hallam. You can use the topics and subtopics to find the information you need or, you can search using the search bar.

It's accessible on and off campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week giving you the flexibility to use it any time, from any place.

SHUgo

Get everything you need in one place with SHUgo!

Access your timetable, maps, module sites and much, much more.

Download from the App Store, Google play or go to m.shugo.shu.ac.uk for windows phones.

Find a PC

We have 4,000 PCs and Macs in libraries, cafes and teaching rooms across campus. View the campus maps below to see where you can find them.

You can find out where there are available computers on MyHallam and on the SHUgo app.

You can also book a PC or a meeting room to make sure you get one when you need one.

There is also a variety of loan laptops available at both campuses.

Please note, the first time you log on to a computer it will take a little longer to load as it will need to download your profile from the server.

Software

Access our software list to find the programmes you need for your course and which computers you can find them on.

Get free or discounted software for use on your own computers and devices.

SHU students now have access to Office 365 which means you can download a free copy of the latest version of Office for use whilst studying.

Go to Lynda.com where you will find loads of online tutorials to help you get the most out of the software, from Microsoft Word and Excel to SPSS and Adobe Dreamweaver.

Office 365

Students can now download a free copy of the latest version of Microsoft Office for use whilst at SHU.

You can install this on up to 5 computers and have unlimited access to the mobile and online apps, so you can use it on your phone or tablet too. You will also have access to OneDrive for Business cloud storage, which offers a massive 1 terabyte of file space. This will make it easier for you to work on your Uni files wherever you want.

To sign up to this new service go to go.shu.ac.uk/office365 and log in using your username in the format username@hallam.shu.ac.uk and your normal University password.

Technology to support your studying

We have lots of technology available to support students with disabilities from software installed on all computers to adjustable hardware in the assistive technology areas.

To find the software available to you go to the Programs menu on any student computer and find the Assistive Technology folder. There are also self-help guides on how to use the software.

You can also contact the Disabled Student Support team for further information and support.
