International Seminar on Francis Bacon (1561-1626)

In the period 6--8/9 September 2001, the School of English and Drama at Queen Mary, University of London, will be hosting the second International Seminar on Francis Bacon. The seminar is provisionally entitled Francis Bacon on History and in History.

It will be concerned, in other words, with all aspects of Bacon's reception (esp. in Continental Europe), and all aspects of his work on history. In the case of the latter, the seminar will concern itself with Bacon's theory and practice of natural, political and intellectual history. We also aim to tie this in with his theory and practice of 'feigned' history--not least with 'feigned' history as exemplified in the New Atlantis.

Students of Bacon and the history of early-modern literature and ideas would be most welcome to participate, and anyone wishing to deliver a paper at the seminar should submit an abstract or outline to the organising committee.

For further information please get in touch with Prof. Graham Rees, Director, the Oxford Francis Bacon, School of English and Drama, Queen Mary, University of London, London E1 4NS, UK (g.c.rees@qmw.ac.uk).
