Summer Fete Engages Sheffield College Parents

Friday 27th July 2018

Parents of students at The Sheffield College have been learning all about higher education at a jam-packed summer fete.

On Wednesday 27th June parents of students at The Sheffield College eligible for HeppSY+ support were invited to attend ‘The Sheffield College HeppSY+ Higher Education Summer Fete’. The first part of the evening was made up of fairground games and progression and information stands from local higher education providers including: The Sheffield College, Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield. The fairground games all focused on higher education and included traditional favourites such as hook-a-duck, as well as other games like giant Connect 4.

The initial fair was followed by a sit-down meal in the College’s restaurant: The Silver Plate. Delegates enjoyed three courses accompanied by summer mocktails that had all been prepared and served by College students who are studying hospitality. During the dinner the guests heard from a variety of speakers about the different opportunities and support available for students in higher education.

One parent said: “It was a wonderful evening, very informative and well planned, thank you!”

Another said: “Thank you so much for the evening, a very pleasant and informative event. I thought the seating of the team on each table was a great idea.”

The event was funded by HeppSY+ as part of the innovation fund, where colleges across the region bid for funds to deliver an innovative activity for a specific audience and purpose. The Sheffield College identified a need to engage with parents about progression opportunities after findings from their HeppSY+ baseline surveys, which were completed at the beginning of the academic year. The findings showed that a large percentage of students at the College said that their family had the greatest influence on their decisions about what to do next.
