The basic functionality of Gabbeh has been completed. To evaluate Gabbeh, an observational study of a simulated design task was conducted. The evaluation consisted of four simulated design exercises, each consisting of two sessions. Three participants were involved in each exercise. Participants were divided into groups of two: designers and one end-user. A design task was allocated for each of the eight sessions. Designers were asked to perform the assigned task to first session by using Denim and the task assigned to second session by using Gabbeh. The result of this evaluation is reported in our recent paper Investigating Annotation in Electronic Paper- Prototypes which will be presented at DSVIS'05.

Research

I am a PhD candidate at the Sheffield Hallam University and working on an EPSRC funded project (GR/R87918) within the Communication and Computing Research Centre. My Research aims to study prototyping methods and design representations applied in development process of interactive systems.

The research will examine the feasibility of creating an electronic prototyping tool that can support useful and suitable design representations for members of different stakeholder groups (Users, Software Engineers and User Interface Designers) in a way that integrates prototyping methods and techniques, such as paper prototyping, electronic sketching and executable formal specifications.

Gabbeh

Gabbeh is an extension to DENIM. The core innovation in Gabbeh is that it allows different stakeholders to add arbitrary annotations in the form of comments either when the model is being designed or when the model is being executed.

End users may execute Gabbeh using a separate limited functionality browser to review a design. To make Gabbeh easier to be used by end-users, the design sheet is excluded from the version of ‘run mode’, which is installed at end-users site. It allows the end-users to work only with a simple browser with annotation features Based on the result of the research.

A comment in Gabbeh can be associated with any arbitrary number of design components, such as panels, labels, texts and scribbles. Comments are given a background colour. This is intended to allow
development teams to distinguish between different types of comments, or perhaps between comments from different speakers. The usage of comment is deliberately left open.

Gabbeh allows end-users to view and add comments while they are reviewing the design in ‘run mode’. This functionality is intended to allow end-users to give feedback through the prototyping medium. Comments are displayed in a side window adjacent to the page. Gabbeh displays the comments location within the page using coloured numbers on the page
