Apprentice Progression

Following the publication in summer 2003 of a research project investigating the opportunities for Advanced Apprentices to progress to HE in South Yorkshire, the Building Pathways Project in partnership with the local LSC, have focussed on Apprentices working in Engineering and Construction, and are currently working on the mapping of pathways for apprentices in Business, Computing, and Health and Social Care sectors. Developing Progression Routes to Higher Education for Modern Apprentices.

The plan incorporated a research activity with Advanced Apprentices on their perception of HE which has now been completed by staff from the Sheffield Hallam University Centre for Research and Evaluation. Recommendations in the report "Advanced Apprentices' Perceptions of HE" will help develop the next phase of the work.  A second report has recently also been completed outlining Employers' views of Apprentice Progression to Higher Education.  Pamphlets have also been produced as guidance tools clarifying the progression routes for apprentices through construction and engineering in partner colleges - these can be viewed or downloaded from the section below.

Work is progressing on drawing up pathways in Business, Computing and Health and Social Care. A multimedia cd rom "Apprentices Aim Higher" has been developed highlighting progression possibilities to Higher Education copies are available from Building Pathways.

You can view a selection of progressing apprentice profiles, or view the Progression pathways in Engineering & Construction brochures for Building Pathways partnership colleges in South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire.
