International perspectives on
citizenship 1: British citizenship

Introduction

A good citizen in Britain might be someone who understands duties such as the duty to pay taxes or serve on a jury. This arises from a European or Western history of ideas and experience. There is a strong notion that citizenship is related to membership of specific nation-state. But is this idea of membership undermined by the boundaries of ethnicity and religion and not class. What about the issues of heritage and citizenship? Is Britain a divided island because it is a multiethnic and multicutural country and in each culture there are differences relating to an individuals' beliefs? This section looks at models of citizenship and how identity and nationalism has made the term citizenship a difficult one to define.
