Seminar One

Understanding the links between socioeconomic deprivation and health among minority ethnic groups

Attempts to understand the links between ethnicity and health in the UK have often given socioeconomic status a central focus. Social, economic and health inequality are increasingly viewed as a set of inter-linked problems commonly afflicting inner-city minority ethnic groups. However, despite evidence that socioeconomic disadvantage does account for a share of excess ill-health among some minority ethnic groups, the picture remains complex. Our understanding of the causal pathways linking these dimensions of inequality remains poor, and it is clear that other factors including culturally-based life-style behaviours, migration history, racism and discrimination, and access to health services interact with socioeconomic forces. This seminar will include presentations of recent work which aims to unpack the linkages between dimensions of socioeconomic disadvantage and health among minority ethnic groups. It will also provide an opportunity for academics, practitioners and policy-makers to debate key issues including the relevance of 'ethnicity' to understanding socioeconomic determinants of health and the role of the health sector in tackling such 'root causes' of ill-health.
