Student perspectives on
politics 1: Democracy

Introduction

If students were teaching this subject, what kind of matrials would they use? In these pages we asked a group of students to identify useful resources in order to help other students create presentations on the nature of democracy. The first series of links to web pages helps students to study the term democracy. But what is democracy? Is it about compromise and resolution? Or is it about values? Or is it about our acceptance of power and authority and at what point does this 'power' transfer to from us to central government and back to 'the people'? But, if democracy is about people what about the rights and liberty of individuals? The second series of web links will help students look at the rights of minorities and small groups in society who feel that the democratic process isn't fair. In the third set of web links, students have found web sites that they believe help students to understand where the power lies in a democratic processes. These pages contain links to web sites to help studrents explore the answers to these questions. Students and staff may wish to view the powerpoint presentation first before starting on the seminar activities.
