Introduction

Listen to the music 'Roots' by Show of Hands - Written by Steve Knightly

Lyrics - Roots Show of Hands - Written by Steve Knightly

This case study provides a discussion of three main strands of citizenship. The first section is an introduction to British citizenship. The second section is concerned with citizenship in Europe, looking at the different principles on which, traditionally, French and German citizenship were founded. The third section leads into issues around the potential for international or global citizenship.

Electronic links to the legislation discussed are embedded in the text, and additional useful web links are included in the bibliography.

The teaching materials section includes lecture slides for a lecture on comparative citizenship as well as lectures on associated areas for example, the founding of the EU and Scottish devolution. Three Workshop Activities are also included which provide questions for small group discussion.
