Instructions for the Preparation of Abstracts

Abstracts of poster communications should be typed in an area 7.0" x 9" (17.5 x 23 cm); 2 pages including references.

Abstracts will either be scanned or read from disc-copy. If submitting a disk-copy please include two hard copies of each abstract in either Microsoft Word or WordPerfect format.

The two hard copies and the abstract in electronic format should be protected with a cardboard insert and mailed to the address indicated below, in addition to being submitted electronically.

Poster dimensions are 1m x 2m (portrait).

Typing: the abstract should be typed (single spacing except where specified) using 12 point type (Times Roman or similar type) of 12 characters per 2.5 cm. Avoid corrections or use of white correcting fluid. Accurate alignment is essential. Smudges, erasures or over-typing are not permissible.

Use black ink to insert symbols not available on the typewriter or computer.

NOTE:

  1. Type a title (CAPITAL LETTERS) only in 14 point type centred at the top of the page; it should occupy no more than two lines.
  2. If the work is intended for oral communication then please underline the name of the author who will present the work. Use other symbols or numerals as superscripts to indicate other affiliations when necessary.

FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS are given BELOW IN THE STYLE OF AN ABSTRACT.

A.J. Brown1 & B.J. Smith2, 1Department of Pharmacology, University of Somewhere, Somewhere, Country, and 2Department of Rheumatology, University of Town, Town, Country.

Leave 1½ lines space then begin text: DO NOT INDENT. Type in 12 point Times New Roman. Leave 1½ lines space between paragraphs. An area of 17.5 x 23 cm will take names and addresses, a text of about 400 words and references. This abstract will be reduced by about 25% for printing text of about 400 words and references. The appearance of the printed page depends on the quality of preparation of the typescript; do not crease it, take great care to follow typing instructions, do not erase or smudge. Practise the layout beforehand within a rectangle.

References in the text should follow a standard style, either "Jones (1980) reported" or, after a statement "(Jones, 1980: Brown & Jones, 1980; Brown et al., 1980)". Use et al for more than 2 names. References (no more than 6) should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the text, using the short form of reference with no title using Index Medicus abbreviation for the journal name.
