Student Support

Introduction

We are here to help you

There are many people in the University who provide services and support for our students on campus. Here we introduce the main support services to make you aware of what's available and who to contact.

Student Health Service

Student health at SHU

We are a team of ten doctors and six nurses, with a full complement of administrative support who provide a full range of general medical services to the local community and students from Hallam University. All patients registered with the practice can be seen at Porter Brook Medical Centre but our site at the City Campus is only available to students of SHU.

It is advisable to register with a doctor as soon as possible after you arrive in Sheffield, especially if you are on medication or require regular medical appointments.

To register, complete the form in the middle of the Student Life publication (a yellow and a purple form) and take it to one of our registration desks during enrolment.

Chaplaincy

Someone to talk to

The Multifaith Chaplaincy is here to support you during your time at Sheffield Hallam, whether or not you are a 'person of faith'. You might have a particular issue that is bothering you, or a difficult decision to make. Maybe you need to talk something through. Or perhaps you just need a listening ear or a chat. You don't need a crisis in order to visit us and whatever you tell us will be treated as confidential.

Ian Maher is the University Chaplain and Coordinator of the Multifaith Chaplaincy. It is often possible simply to drop-in Ian's office, in Room 525 of the Owen Building, just around the corner from Student and Academic Services. Alternatively, you can contact the Multifaith Chaplaincy to make an appointment.

Library Service

Local learning community

As part of Sheffield Hallam University's commitment to the local learning community, the Learning and IT Services department provides a range of facilities for users who are not members of the University.

Reference use

Sheffield Hallam University is a member of the South Yorkshire Access to Libraries for Learning (SYALL) scheme and welcomes independent learners. This is an initiative between South Yorkshire's academic and public libraries to open up access to library facilities throughout South Yorkshire for those involved in learning and research that are not registered with an educational establishment. The scheme is co-ordinated by SINTO, the co-operative organisation for libraries and information in South Yorkshire.

Members of the public may use the library resources for reference.

It may be helpful to telephone first, particularly if the enquiry is a complex one where help may be required, or where it would be appropriate to make an appointment with a subject specialist.

LitSearch is the gateway to our e-resources. Guests can view the resources available and are able to search free resources.
