About Sheffield
City of Sheffield
The world knows Sheffield for its historical heritage in the steel, cutlery, engineering and tool making industries. In the last decade, however, Sheffield has undergone a dramatic transformation, becoming a great place to visit and attracting over four million tourists every year.
Sheffield is England's fourth-largest city, with the wealth of facilities you would expect to find in a major city - yet it's compact, friendly and accessible. The city is geographically diverse, located at the confluence of five rivers, with much of the city having been built on hillsides with views into the city centre or out to the countryside.
Notable buildings in the city centre include the Grade I listed Town Hall and the Cathedral and the City Hall and the Winter Gardens. Several areas of the city centre have been designated as quarters. Of these, the Devonshire Quarter and Cultural Industries Quarter are the best known.
The City centre is currently under going massive re-generation with every section of the City centre set to be re-developed. Plans and projects include the development of new squares and public spaces, new residential and office buildings.
The Peace and Winter Gardens won Great Place 2008 awarded by the Academy of Urbanism.
